School Selection Criteria and Pilot Requirements
Schools selected for the Kansas Reading Initiative shall represent a diverse cross-section of Kansas schools to include:
- Existing Schools using Lexia;
- A variety of urban, suburban, and rural schools;
- Small, medium and large school districts;
- Ethnic diversity within schools selected; and
All applications will be considered and approved for start-up in the order they are received until all grant slots are filled. Lowest performing schools will take precedence if applications exceed available grants.
Each school selected for the Kansas Reading Initiative shall:
- Implement the Kansas Reading Initiative grant with a population of 30 or more students in a K-5th population.
- Require all teachers to attend professional development training sessions;
- Require that 60% of the students enrolled in the Kansas Reading Initiative meet their usage requirements, followed by 75% in the second year;
- Require that principals and teachers conduct data meetings as grade level teams at least once per month to monitor student progress as reported to the Kansas Reading Initiative EDS representative and implement recommended strategies and interventions;
- With a FERPA compliant environment provided, I agree to submit to the EDS and Lexia Research Teams the student demographic data and corresponding data from either state or national reading assessments;
- Assign a technology person who will be involved and understand system requirements and be an important part of implementation during the Kansas Reading Initiative;
- Assign a school liaison to serve and be the point of contact between EDS and school (liaison should be an active participant in the KRI pilot);
- Pilot schools are encouraged to conduct a parent meeting with EDS assistance, which could be part of an open house or back to school night, that shares information about Lexia with parents and possibly provides a copy of their child’s Lexia Reading Report;
- Pilot schools agree to participate in surveys from Educational Design Solutions.
- Data will be collected and shared with appropriate State Agencies.
Classroom Fidelity Checklist
- Fidelity of student use-is the student meeting prescribed time on the program
- Fidelity of teacher use and MyLexia-are teachers checking in MyLexia weekly to:
- Monitor student progress
- Plan target instruction
- Teacher/Student small group instruction-are Lexia Lessons or comparable lessons being used to address the specific skills where students are struggling
- When students are on the computer or iPad, are they being monitored so they are staying on task?
- Students should wear headphones with the volume set appropriately
- Students are logged into their own Lexia account
- Student are using Lexia Reading and not navigating to other websites
- Students who struggle should receive additional help from teacher to move on
- Students who are working through the program and have understanding of skills, Skill Builders will be assigned to move the skill from understanding on the computer to build automaticity and generalize knowledge
Educational Design Solutions facilitation will include:
- An EDS school coordinator will be assigned to each KRI school;
- School Coordinators will assist each school liaison with monitoring of progress, additional teacher training, parent meetings, required state reports, and other operational needs;
- School coordinators will be available to the school staff to assist with any implementation needs;
- A Regional Director will be available in the Eastern and Western parts to support all KRI operations and;
- Communications will be facilitated through the KRI Program Director and KRI Logistics Manager.
Lexia Reading facilitation will include:
- Support in Regional Meetings;
- Support in the data analysis for state reports using Lexia’s automated data collection systems; and
- Possible support with staff development.
